Mestre Pastinha.

Origin of Capoeira

There are many theories on the evolution of capoeira, but it is undeniable that its roots are African, its movements and its rhythm leave no doubts.

The movements (corta-capim, rabo de arraia, au, chamadas, chapa de frente e de costas) and rhythms are inherited from African war dance. Later on, after the arrival in the new world, it evolved in what is now known as Capoeira.

In Brazil the first clues of Capoeira are from the Recôncavo Baiano, which came after teachers from the holy Amaroda Purificacao.

Mestre Pastinha.

Capoeira - Pratical Definition

The movements are traditional and every capoeira play each according to his physical constitution.

There are some basic movements (golpes) that give complex variations and combinations in a game of Capoeira. Their application depends on the creativity of each capoeirista, but always taking into account the movements of his partner. This establishes a body dialogue made of answers and questions or, like  Master Joao Grande says, "positive and negative."

The Ethics of the capoeirista in the Roda is important too! It was a great lesson that was previously passed by the Masters and now is getting lost a Roda of Capoeira.

Mestre Pastinha
